The Threat of Photos Reduces Disability Parking Abuse

It seems that some people who park without permit in mobility parking spaces know very well they are in the wrong. I was told how someone was at the garden centre and they noticed cars parked without permits. By the time this person had been aiming their phone at the cars, one driver was running to their car, and the garden centre staff making a call on the speakers.

This store has two disability parking spots. That day, both were occupied by cars without permits. This person took their cellphone out and while they were adjusting the camera on it, they heard someone swear and start running. As they turned, they saw the patron abandoning their purchases in the shopping cart right in the middle of the entrance, and run to move the car.

A moment later, an announcement was heard on the loudspeaker. Something like "If you are parked in a disability space, you should move, someone is taking photos".

Isn't it interesting?

The shop seems to have the attitude that these spaces can be used by just about anyone. In fact, they were telling their patrons that the only reason to move out is to make sure their cars aren't captured in photo.

It's a bit sad to be reminded that the main incentive for people not to poach disability carparks is that they don't want to be caught at it.

Yet, the important thing is that they stop using the carparks. The motivation for it is irrelevant. And I'm willing to bed that those drivers will think again before parking in a disability parking space in the near future.

The taxi company was contacted and their general manager is going to look into it. He said: "If you have any additional information on the date and time of this incident I would welcome the receipt of that so we can identify the driver concerned at the time and address the matter with them directly.

I may not buy more in one go, but I guarantee you I spend as much, if not more, than the average punter does in a week.
