UK Petition to enforce DDA

A visitor to our site has pointed us to a petition to the UK Prime Minister to create a task force to enforce the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). The email said:

At the moment in the UK if a disabled parking space is on private property (eg a supermarket) they are not enforced and and many of the ones on the public roads are not legally enforceable.

One of the issues with the DDA, along with other laws such as the ADA in the US, or the Bill of Rights in New Zealand, is that there is no body or organisation in charge of compliance and enforcement. The legislation is there, but they are toothless. As a result, the miscreant that act illegally (such as violating disability parking spaces) feel they can continue to act in all impunity.

So, if you are a British citizen or Permanent Resident, go on and sign the petition. It's a good cause.

The details of the petition are as follows:

Some companies are still failing to meet their duties under this law. Individuals making complaints are often answered politely but no changes are made and the individual is left with the option of allowing the company to continue to ignore their needs or to seek legal advice which can be costly.

I would like to see a task force/adjudicator appointed to and check that companies are complying with the act and investigate complaints made under the DDA. I would like them to have powers over all sectors covered by the DDA and have powers to issue fines and order compensation payments. This would remove the burden from the individual and ensure that the requirements of the act are met for the benefit of all disabled people.

Doesn't your police force write tickets for illegal parking? Here in the United States, the police agency having jurisdiction is responsible for the enforcement of handicap parking. I don't really know of any handicap parking on public roads, they are all on private property, but that is one of the three violations that the police can act on on private property. These are: Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, and Handicap Parking Violations.
In addition, any violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 can be handled by our Justice Departement. I wish you luck in your petition

Allen, unfortunately, neither in the UK nor in New Zealand are police officers allowed to issue parking tickets (or even traffic tickets) on private property, unless the property owner specifically invites them to do so.

The taxi company was contacted and their general manager is going to look into it. He said: "If you have any additional information on the date and time of this incident I would welcome the receipt of that so we can identify the driver concerned at the time and address the matter with them directly.

I may not buy more in one go, but I guarantee you I spend as much, if not more, than the average punter does in a week.
