It's not just an inconvenience

The impact of having disability parking spaces filled up by people who don't need them is not just an inconvenience to those of us with mobility impairments (or other disabilities that give us a need for either a spot close to the door, or a spot wide enough to unload a wheelchair, walkers, etc). I just read a blog where the person was unable to attend a review of her eligibility to receive food stamps, because she simply couldn't park.

She describes a break down of the system nearly from beginning to end (IMHO, maybe the system was designed that way on purpose, but that's another story entirely). She writes:

July 20--get up, take bath, fill portable oxygen tank, drive to 12th & Vliet. There is no disabled parking left. Drive around the block for about 20 minutes and no parking becomes available. Go home and try to get through --line busy.

And there you have it folks! This happens regularly, and it's not just an inconvenience, it's a very real impact on someone's life. It's not about someone not being able to get a pint of milk, or drop off the dry-cleaning. It's about someone not being able to receive food stamps that will allow them to afford food!

The taxi company was contacted and their general manager is going to look into it. He said: "If you have any additional information on the date and time of this incident I would welcome the receipt of that so we can identify the driver concerned at the time and address the matter with them directly.

I may not buy more in one go, but I guarantee you I spend as much, if not more, than the average punter does in a week.
