As a former police officer, I know all about the special driving privileges given to emergency vehicle drivers. Before Tina or Catty or anyone else blows a gasket, that is exactly what it is referred to as in the Arizona revised Statutes Section 28, which is traffic law. I have no problem with a police car using a handicap space in an emergency. However, if no emergency situation exists or it has already been handled, then move the friggin' car! On one I posted, the officer was flagged down by a hysterical female, so he just parked in hp space. When we arrived, there was no sense of urgency anywhere, the officer was lounging around at the store's service desk, and his car was 2 spaces from a non-HC
space. He could, at that point, moved his car over 10 feet and been perfectly legal, and also closer to the entrance.

Tina, you are right, if an officer in the process of attending an emergency needs to use a disability parking space, then so be it. But in this case, there was obviously many more areas where they could have stopped.

The thing is, cops don't have a de facto right to use the mobility parking spaces just because they are cops. They need to be on duty, and there must be some demonstrated needs (nowhere else to park, other places too far, etc).

Please!!!! While i do understand the need to NOT park in handicapped parking spaces a COP at a apartment building or any other scene of a call HAS the right to park where he NEEDS to to do his job fast! Want him to have to run down several spaces further and not be there in time to help out victims? GET A LIFE if a cops in a handicapped space he has MORE right to it than the person in a wheelchair does as he has an important, possibly lifesaving job to do!!!!

I certainly understand the police using any spot to stop in an emergency, but you're right, when this kind of thing happens, it's no fun. And it's not just in the US. It's in the UK (<a href="/drive-by/2006/08/official-vehicles-in-accessible-spaces.html" rel="nofollow">http://caughtya.org/drive-by/2006/08/official-vehicles-in-accessible-spaces.html</a>) and in NZ (<a href="/new-zealand/2006/08/dark-blue-holden.html" rel="nofollow">http://caughtya.org/new-zealand/2006/08/dark-blue-holden.html</a>)

The thing is, police officers are people too, warts and all...

This makes me sick... Of all people to do something like this, a police officer! How sad...

No wonder people have no faith in our law enforcement anymore.
